Meet the team - Philip Parsons, Group Health and Safety Manager

What’s your job title?

Group Health and Safety Manager

 

What does your job involve?

My job involves looking after Squire and Stark’s many health and safety responsibilities to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and that our employees, contractors, visitors and anyone else affected by our activities are kept safe and healthy at all times. I also look after the environmental considerations of the business, including the requirements to meet ISO14001, the BSI Environment Management standard.

On a typical day I could be out visiting construction sites, working with our operational teams and project managers, reviewing policies and procedures, carrying out audits and inspections, conducting training, or attending committee meetings on health and safety, workplace wellbeing, mental health etc. In summary, my role is very varied but extremely rewarding and will allow me to use my knowledge and experience to contribute to the business as it continues to develop and grow.

 

What’s your background?

I have had a varied career working in the security industry, civil service and then in the Metropolitan Police until 2012, when I decided to leave London and retrain. My next role was as Facilities Manager for a 13-million-pound company in West Sussex, where I began my training in health and safety. Most recently, I worked for two years at a major gas network as Safety, Health and Environmental Manager.

I’ve gained a wide range of HSE qualifications and continue to further my knowledge and keep up-to-date with changing legislation. I’m currently studying for a Diploma in Counselling skills, a Level 3 certificate in Management and Leadership and am about to start an accredited Coaching and NLP practitioner course. I’m also a Graduate Member of IOSH (Institute of Occupational Safety and Health), a member of IFSM (Institute of Fire Safety Managers) and an Associate Member of both IGEM (Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers) and the Energy Institute.

 

Why Squire Energy?

My last role was in a large organisation where it was always challenging to make a positive difference so when this opportunity came up I jumped at the chance to take on a position where I could use my skills, qualifications and experience to develop and support the aims of the business. I am driven to keep people safe and healthy in both body and mind, and I’m pleased to have joined during an exciting period of company expansion.

 

What’s your favourite part of your job?

My role plays a part in all the business facets, which means I get to work with fantastic, like-minded people each and every day. I firmly believe it’s people that make everything happen and without positive, passionate employees there is no business.

I am most looking forward to helping shape the way health, safety and environmental matters are managed across the group. A large part of this involves the introduction of a safety culture, which can take some time to embed, but is an essential part of any management system.

 

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I enjoy spending time with family and friends, playing golf, walking, and visiting new places. I also collect different spirits from around the world.

 

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Reliable, smart and witty.

It has to be a large rum on the rocks or G&T.
