DIY SOS: Grenfell Tower

When the Grenfell Tower fire struck in June 2017, over a hundred families lost their homes, but they also lost an integral part of the community – the Dale Youth Amateur Boxing Club. Located on the 1st floor, the Dale Youth Amateur Boxing Club was credited with turning around the lives of many young people, having trained a number successful boxers in the 60 years of its existence.

A little more than a year later, the team from DIY SOS has built a brand new multi-use community space for the community in and around Grenfell, including a new purpose-built gym for the Dale Youth Amateur Boxing Club. Located at Bay 20, Maxilla Walk – a short distance from the site of the Grenfell Tower – the new community centre will be accessible and affordable for the whole community.

Funded by £2 million worth of donations, it’s been a project fuelled by the compassion and generosity of all those involved – from building companies, suppliers and volunteers. Squire Energy is honoured to have also made a small contribution, by performing a time-sensitive live or dead test on an existing gas service during the community centre’s construction.

The two-part DIY SOS: Grenfell television programme will be broadcast on Wednesday 5th and 12th September on BBC One.
