Due to the uncertainty within the construction industry, we have been advised by our customers that a number of projects / sites where Squire Energy is involved have been closed, put on temporary hold subject to rolling review, or (in the case of some construction sites) closed down completely, due to current government guidelines, general uncertainty and to try and weather the coronavirus pandemic.
There has been considerable confusion within the industry as to whether construction works should be continuing, whether construction workers should simply remain at home or, where personnel are on site, whether they can undertake their tasks safely whilst adhering to the guidelines by the government, Public Health England and the NHS. We are playing our part to ensure the economy can continue, that gas infrastructure gets delivered and our customers continue to receive the level of high-quality service that they have always received from us. We do all this, with our usual priority and focus on health, safety, the environment and the welfare of our personnel, customers, third parties involved in the supply chain, the general public and anyone else affected by our works. Safety was, is and remains our top priority.
Finally, the UK Government has published a letter to the construction industry giving clarity on this, which you can read here – Letter from the Secretary of State to the Construction Industry.
As a result of the current health crisis, and actions taken by our customers and some suppliers, we have been reviewing our operations for some time, and whilst we have opted to place our operations (only) activities on temporary pause for two weeks, allowing us to review and re-establish a safe system of works, this guidance from the government is welcomed. We have also been working to establish new methods of operating in line with the guidelines, PHE guidance and the Construction Leadership Council’s Site Operating Procedures.
Although we have enacted this temporary pause on our operations activities, we have not cancelled any projects or works and are otherwise operating business as usual, with our development teams, quotations, quality, IT, metering, IGT, asset management, planning and support functions working from home wherever possible.
